Thoracic Surgery at the „Home of the Lung“

The Ruhrlandklinik – the West German Lung Center at the University Hospital Essen – is one of the leading medical Institutions for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of lung and respiratory diseases in Germany. Roughly 18,000 patients a year get treated here. The catchment area of the clinic goes well beyond the borders of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Thoracic surgery at the “Home of the Lung” covers the entire spectrum of thoracic diseases: from the surgery of tumours of any kind to pulmonary emphysema and the elimination of anomalies of the lungs and chest. Eighty percent of patients are in for the surgical treatment of malignant tumours. Lung cancer and lung metastases are the surgeon’s main fields of application.

Operating at the Most Modern Level

Also in thoracic surgery, robotic-assisted precision surgery has become increasingly popular. To further ensure the most modern level of operative care for our patients, the Ruhrlandklinik acquired its own daVinci robot in November 2014 for the Department of Thoracic Surgery. It is located at the University Hospital Essen and is used interdisciplinarily.
